'Scrap Charter amending body'

Media busy with WCs, charter amendment, not daily crises: Moudud

A News and Images report

Dhaka, July 29: BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmad Thursday  called on the government to scrap the special committee formed to amend the Constitution.

Addressing a round table titled '1972 constitution amendment, type of special committee and citizen’s opinion,' he said that to amend the basic structure of the constitution, a committee should be formed with an equal number of members from the ruling and opposition parties.

The programme was held at the National Press Club.

He alleged that the present special committee was a one party one, and that if it amended the constitution, it could be debatable. He also criticized the media saying that it was ignoring daily crises and covering the issue of war criminals and amendment to the constitution.

Opposition Chief Whip Joynal Abedin Faruq said that if the government wanted to amend the constitution, it would be necessary to discuss with the main opposition BNP.
