They vandalise cars prompting police to use batons

Dhaka, July 30: Police have used batons on thousands of readymade garment workers protesting in the Mohakhali area Friday against the newly announced wage structure and demanding Tk 5,000 as minimum wages.


The workers began agitating in the Tejgaon Industrial area, Mohakhali and Gulshan Link Road Friday morning and were holding processions, according to police sources.


They vandalised several cars setting one on fire.


The workers also rejected police calls for a negotiations with the BGMEA, according to sources.

Police then lathi-charged them, in response to which, workers threw brickbats at police.

The government Thursday announced new minimum wages for the readymade garment workers.

Three workers' groups:  Garments Shramik Oikya Parisad, the Jatiya Sramik Jote and the Garments Sramik Jote - rejected it and asked for a review.
