Lack of stringent monitoring seen as the cause A News and Images report Dhaka, July 30: Prices of sugar, fish and vegetables were up while that of rice declined in the city's kitchen markets, traders said Friday. The traders said a group of dishonest businessmen capitalizing on the lack of government strong monitoring was responsible for the high prices of essentials even weeks before the month of Ramadan. Price of sugar was up by Tk 4 per kg and selling at Tk 48 at the retailers’ level last week. Meanwhile, prices of different varieties of rice came down, market sources said. A seller said that Minicate was Tk 38-40 per kg against Tk 40-43 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 40-45 per kg against Tk 42-46 per kg last week. IRRI was selling at Tk 32 per kg, Pari at Tk 34 per kg down from Tk 36 per kg, BR-28 at Tk 34-36 per kg and Lata at Tk 34 per kg against Tk 36 per kg at the retail level last week. Tomato continued its high level mainly due to off-season supply shortage and it was selling at Tk 100- Tk 120 per kg, which was Tk 90 per kg in the previous week. Potato price was also up by Tk 1.0 and was selling at Tk 15 per kg. Prices of other vegetables also went up last week. Long beans (borboty) was selling at Tk 30-35 per kg against Tk 25-28 per kg, brinjal at Tk 50-Tk 55 per kg against Tk 50 per kg, okra at Tk 40 per kg against Tk 30 per kg, potol at Tk 30 per kg against Tk 25 per kg and papaya at Tk 30 against Tk 28 per kg in the previous week. A pair of medium-sized hilsa was selling at Tk 1200 against the previous week's price at Tk 800-1000. Shrimp was selling at Tk 450-600 per kg. Prices of other fishes increased by Tk 20 to Tk 50 per kg last week. 'Ruhi' was selling at Tk 250- Tk 280 per kg, 'katla' at Tk 190- Tk 220 per kg, 'pangas' at Tk 100- Tk 120 per kg, 'silver carp' at Tk 200 per kg and 'mrigel' at Tk 170-Tk 200 per kg in the city's kitchen markets. Of the small fishes, 'tilapia' was priced at Tk 130-150, 'puti' at Tk 200-300 and 'tengra' at Tk 300-330 a kg on an average. |
