BP caps leaking well

Ability to contain leak not assured, warn officials

News and Images Desk

July 13: Energy giant BP successfully installed a new sealing cap on the leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well, reports quoted company officials as saying.

It was being hoped that the new cap would stop the leak and capture all the oil before it could pour into the sea.

But BP issued a warning saying that the cap system had never been deployed at such depths and "its efficiency and ability to contain the oil and gas cannot be assured".

It also said that the two relief wells being drilled remain the only way to seal the leak permanently in a process due to be completed by mid-August.

Meanwhile, the US government issued a new deep-water drilling moratorium to replace the one struck down in court.
