Sep 5: Israel has launched a series of air raids against targets in southern Gaza just hours after Palestinian fighters fired a rocket over the border. 

Witnesses and Hamas security officials said late on Saturday that Israeli aircraft struck targets including smuggling tunnels running under the border with Egypt at Rafah within hours. 

At least 21 people have been killed

Sep 5: Unrelenting rains and severe weather have lashed Guatemala, leaving at least 21 people dead over the past 24 hours, in what the country's president calls a "national tragedy". 

Twelve people were killed, and another dozen injured on Saturday when a rain-triggered landslide buried a bus on a major highway near central Chimaltenango city.

Sep 4: A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck New Zealand's South Island, 30 km west of Christchurch, damaging roads, buildings and severing electricity across the region. 

No tsunami alert was issued but a state of emergency was declared in the area to facilitate recovery operations early on Saturday morning.

Sep 4: At least 56 people have been killed and 200 injured in a suicide attack targeting a Shia Muslim rally in Pakistan's southwest city of Quetta.  

Police officers said the bomber was among the 450-strong crowd and had detonated the device on reaching the main square in the city on Friday. 

The explosion triggering chaotic scenes, with some people set on fire as others fled or lay on the ground to avoid ongoing gunfire. 

Both sides have agreed to meet again in the Middle East

Sep 3: Israeli and Palestinian leaders have held their first direct negotiations in nearly two years, in Washington. 

The US Middle East envoy said the talks, between Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, had been "constructive". 

Both sides have agreed to meet again in the Middle East in two weeks.
