England one up against Bangladesh

Dhaka, July 9: England took a 1-0 lead in the one-day series against Bangladesh with a straightforward six-wicket win at Trent Bridge on Thursday.  

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first, so England - who found themselves chasing for all five matches during the series against Australia - had to do so again.

 
Tigers win 2nd warm up by 141 runs

July 6: In their second tune-up match for the 50-over series with England, the Tigers closed out a comfortable 141-run victory with more than 10 overs to spare. 

Batting first, the tourists set a total of 301-7 from their allotted overs - with Jahurul Islam's 88 the highlight - before bowling the Panthers out for a lowly 160.

 
7-up Portugal pepper DPRK

Portugal found their goalscoring touch as they overpowered North Korea 7-0 at a rain-soaked Green Point Stadium in World Cup Group G. 

Having failed to impress in their opening Group G stalemate with the Ivory Coast, Carlos Queiroz's side were under pressure to deliver against North Korea with a showdown against Brazil still to come.  

 

And they did that emphatically today as Raul Meireles scored in the first half before Simao Sabrosa, Hugo Almeida and Tiago hit one apiece within seven second-half minutes.
 
Red Hot Chile roll Swiss

Chile are in pole position to qualify from Group H at the World Cup after beating 10-man Switzerland 1-0 in Port Elizabeth on Monday.  

Former Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez, now at CSKA Moscow, struck with 15 minutes remaining as Switzerland, reduced to 10 men when Valon Behrami was sent off before the break, finally succumbed at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.   

His goal will send the South Americans into their final Group H clash with Spain knowing a point will be enough to take them through to the knockout stages.
 
Maradona Delighted With Lionel Messi

Argentina coach Diego Maradona has reiterated how pleased he has been with Lionel Messi’s contribution in the World Cup so far.

“Messi wants to play every match and I love that,” Maradona told a press conference when asked about the FIFA World Player of the Year, who will captain his country against Greece tomorrow.


“I was thinking of giving him some rest,” he continued.
